Halloween Safety Tips for Pets: Keep Your Dogs and Cats Comfortable

A Cozy, Carefree Halloween with Your Dog

The pumpkins are on the porch, the candy bowl is ready, and your dog is wondering why the neighbors suddenly look so strange.

Halloween brings plenty of excitement, but between costumes, crowds, and a constantly ringing doorbell, it can be a lot for our pets. A little planning helps everyone enjoy the evening.

At Louie de Coton®, comfort is always close to our hearts. Here are a few simple ways to keep your dog comfortable, safe, and included this Halloween.

Start with a familiar routine

Try to keep meals, walks, and rest close to their usual times. If possible, take your dog for a walk before trick-or-treating begins, with plenty of time to sniff and explore before the neighborhood gets busy.

Heading out after dark? Use a secure leash, check that their identification tags are attached, and add reflective gear to help them stay visible.

Make room for a quiet evening

Even a dog who loves visitors may grow tired of a steady stream of unfamiliar faces at the door.

Set up a comfortable spot away from the entrance with their bed, water, and a favorite toy. A separate room gives them somewhere to settle and helps prevent an escape while you’re handing out candy. Let guests know when your pet needs some space.

Keep dress-up comfortable

Some pets happily wear an outfit; others would rather skip it. Let their comfort and body language guide you.

Try anything new before the celebration. Your dog or cat should be able to move, see, and breathe freely, without loose pieces they could chew or swallow. Supervise them while they’re dressed. If they freeze, hide, try to pull the outfit off, or seem uneasy, remove it.

For pets comfortable wearing accessories, a cute, well-fitting bandana or bow tie can be stylish and festive without the fuss of a full costume.

Their comfort matters more than the photo.

A little warmth with a festive touch

In cooler climates, short-haired pets may need an extra layer on chilly October days. A comfortable, well-fitting outfit in Halloween colors can add warmth while looking festive.

Louie de Coton® offers cozy options that bring together comfort, function, and seasonal style. Choose a layer suited to the weather, watch for signs your pet is too warm or uncomfortable, and let their body language guide you.

Save the sweets for people

Keep Halloween candy in a closed cabinet between visitors, and remember the treat bags children bring home.

Chocolate is dangerous for dogs, and xylitol, found in some sugar-free candy and gum, can be life-threatening. Have your dog’s usual treats available so family members know what they can offer.

If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Take a look around before the fun begins

A wagging tail and a curious nose can find things we overlook. Secure electrical cords, put small decorations and costume accessories out of reach, and choose battery-operated lights for your pumpkins instead of candles.

A quick check before guests arrive can make the evening easier.
